on a very base level because there's huge repressed fear about the whole issue
the things people are the most afraid of, they tend to render invisible unless their immediate survival is threatened
on a more banal level, it's normal to dismiss thoughts and ideas that take you beyond a certain discomfort threshold
anyone who attains any degree of social sophistication / gets into playing mindgames knows this as an essential survival tactic
at a certain point of fear/paranoia/complexity/unhandleability it's de rigeur to just blink and shake your head and go 'ah doesn't matter what's for lunch'
and it's partly, i believe, because people are actively bound (in magickal terms) / conditioned (in metaprogramming terms) not to think about it
